Affordable emergency food kits on Amazon

A bucket can be a handy way to start an emergency pantry. The trick is finding out how much food is really inside it—and how many people each opened pouch will feed.

01 Where we'd start

Most calories for the money: The Augason Farms 30-Day 1-Person Kit was $85.09 for 38,700 calories when we checked. That's roughly $2.20 per 1,000 calories. Its “30 days” means 1,290 calories a day for one person. At 2,000 calories per adult per day, it is about 9.7 days for two people, before accounting for different appetites or activity.

Lowest-cost entrée bucket: The Augason Farms Lunch & Dinner Variety Pail was $58.72 for 22,940 calories—about $2.56 per 1,000 calories. It has no real breakfast plan and some of its 113 servings are sides or pudding. It works best alongside ordinary pantry food.

Breakfast that isn't another pasta dinner: The ReadyWise 120-Serving Breakfast Bucket was $114.99. Its manufacturer currently lists 30 sealed pouches, four servings per pouch, with cereal and granola. You can eat the granola dry if water or a stove is scarce. It is a breakfast supplement, not a balanced 120-meal supply.

Smallest meal pouches: Mountain House Expedition packs 15 two-serving pouches, but at $176.99 it is a convenience purchase, not the budget winner. If you care most about opening one pouch for two people, the premium may be worth considering later.

02 Compare the numbers

One-time Amazon prices observed September 25, 2026; shipping, coupons, and subscriptions may change your checkout price. Calorie totals come from the linked manufacturers, except the Mountain House estimate, which uses the nutrition-facts image shown with its Amazon listing. “Two-adult days” divides total calories by 4,000, using 2,000 calories per person per day; it is a calorie comparison, not a nutrition claim.

These are product photos shown on the manufacturers' pages, not a promise of the exact packaging Amazon will ship. Check the selected assortment and delivered label—especially for ReadyWise.

*The ReadyWise breakfast “days” are a mathematical calorie total, not a suggestion to eat only cereal. ReadyWise's current manufacturer pages give these pouch counts, but Amazon's listing copy includes older assortments. Check the exact product photos, label, and contents shipped.

†Mountain House estimate: The nutrition-facts image shown with the Amazon listing has 3 Breakfast Skillet pouches (520 calories each), 3 Chicken Fajita Bowl (560), 3 Beef Stroganoff (560), 2 Granola (420), 2 Chicken Fried Rice (600), and 2 Spaghetti (500). That sums to 7,960 calories; at $176.99, about $22.23 per 1,000 calories and 1.99 days for two adults at 2,000 calories each per day. Mountain House's current product page lists a different pouch mix, so treat this as an Amazon-listing estimate and check the delivered labels.

Mountain House's chart values are estimates based on the Amazon listing's nutrition-facts image, not a verified calorie total for the bucket delivered.

The two Augason kits together cost $143.81 for 61,640 calories at these prices. The ReadyWise entrée bucket is still an option if you prefer its recipes, but it does not deliver more calories for the money. A $97.99 price can appear on a different ReadyWise 120-serving variation in Amazon's selector; the 60-serving entrée listing we checked was $102.00. Look at the selected flavor and serving count before comparing prices.

03 What each bucket does well

Augason Farms 30-Day 1-Person Kit

Its current product sheet lists 194 servings in 23 pouches, including oatmeal, pancakes, rice dishes, pasta, soup, and a whey milk drink. It has 10 listed varieties and 36 grams of protein per manufacturer “day.”

  • Pros: The best calorie value in this group; breakfast and savory food in one bucket; separately sealed inner pouches keep the rest protected when you open the pail.
  • Cons: Most pouches are family-size dry mixes, so two people may open more food than they want at once. Most meals need water and 12–15 minutes of cooking. The 1,290-calorie “day” is light for many adults.

Augason Farms Lunch & Dinner Variety Pail

The manufacturer's current 113-serving label lists 15 pouches and 13 varieties. The mix includes pasta and rice dishes, soups, mashed potatoes, black bean burger mix, and chocolate pudding.

  • Pros: Low upfront price and strong calories per dollar; plenty of savory options; inner pouches stay sealed after the bucket opens.
  • Cons: “113 servings” does not mean 113 full dinners. Pouches vary from four to 16 servings, and most meals need cooking water and a heat source. Add breakfast and some ready-to-eat protein.

ReadyWise 120-Serving Breakfast Bucket

ReadyWise's current product page lists four cereal and granola varieties, 27,400 total calories, and about 120 cups (7.5 gallons) of preparation water if you make every serving as directed.

  • Pros: Four-serving pouches suit two people better than an eight- or 16-serving mix. Granola adds a useful dry, no-cook option. Breakfast variety breaks up a pantry heavy on pasta and rice.
  • Cons: Sweet and grain-heavy; not a substitute for entrées or protein. Product photos and descriptions may show different assortments, so compare the carton you receive with the listing.

ReadyWise 60-Serving Entrée Bucket

The manufacturer's current version has ten six-serving pouches, 12,720 calories, and needs about 60 cups (3.75 gallons) of water. A whole pouch would average 1,272 calories: roughly 636 calories each if two adults split it.

  • Pros: Nine listed entrée varieties, and one pouch makes a reasonable main meal for two if each person wants roughly three labeled servings.
  • Cons: It costs much more per calorie here. Six-serving pouches may still be too big for a small meal. Amazon's “included components” text also describes an older four-serving pouch assortment; verify the version and total calories before ordering.

Mountain House Expedition Bucket

Mountain House lists 15 pouches with two servings each, including breakfast and meat entrées. The company says the whole bucket takes 21 cups of water and the meals can be prepared in their pouches. It carries a 30-year taste guarantee under the maker's terms.

  • Pros: Smaller pouches reduce dry-mix leftovers for a two-person household; just-add-water prep avoids a cooking pot; clear bucket-level water amount.
  • Cons: At an estimated $22.23 per 1,000 calories, it is much more expensive per calorie than the other kits here. Thirty labeled servings are not thirty person-days. The Amazon nutrition image and manufacturer's current pouch mix differ, so check shipped nutrition panels before treating it as a complete food supply.

04 A sensible order for two people

  1. Start with food you already eat. Canned beans, fish or chicken, peanut butter, crackers, fruit, and other shelf-stable foods give you meals when the stove or tap is out. Your regular grocery store may beat Amazon on price. Keep a manual can opener.
  2. Add a value bucket if you want long storage. At this price, the Augason 30-Day kit buys the most calories and covers more than one meal type. The $58.72 lunch-and-dinner pail is the cheaper first purchase if you already have breakfasts covered.
  3. Fill the actual gaps. The ReadyWise breakfast bucket makes sense for a household tired of savory freeze-dried food at breakfast. Small Mountain House pouches make sense if easy two-person portions are the priority and the higher price fits.

If you bought the Augason 30-Day kit and the ReadyWise breakfast bucket, you have 66,100 listed calories. That is about 16.5 days for two adults at 2,000 calories each per day on paper. The breakfast bucket supplies a large share of those calories, and the Augason kit is carbohydrate-heavy. Add familiar protein, fat, fruits and vegetables, plus foods you can eat without water or heat. Use the food planner to size the rest of your pantry.

05 Water, heat, and opened pouches

Store water for people first. The CDC recommends at least one gallon per person per day for drinking, cooking, and basic hygiene, and more in hot climates. For two people, that is at least two gallons per day; a two-week baseline is 28 gallons, with extra for heat, pets, and water-hungry meals. Our water calculator can help set a household target.

For the Augason 30-Day kit plus the ReadyWise breakfast bucket, the breakfast portion alone needs about 120 cups, or 7.5 gallons, if you prepare every serving as directed. Augason does not publish one preparation-water total for that 30-Day bucket, so add up the directions on the pouches you receive before setting your final reserve. For comparison, ReadyWise lists 60 cups (3.75 gallons) for its entrée bucket, and Mountain House lists 21 cups for Expedition. Preparation water is part of your stored-water plan, alongside drinking and hygiene, so do not assume a bucket is useful without safe water.

Five-gallon drinking-water jugs can work well at home if they are food-grade and you can lift them. Two hold 10 gallons, which covers the published breakfast preparation amount but leaves little for everything else. The CDC says commercially bottled water is the most reliable emergency source; if you fill your own containers, replace that water every six months. In hot places such as Tucson, keep the jugs indoors.

Opening the outer bucket does not open its inner pouches. Augason says unopened pouches in its kits retain their full shelf life. Once a pouch itself is opened, its FAQ says to use the dry food within one year. Keep it closed, dry, and protected; check the particular pouch's instructions. Long-life claims apply under suitable storage conditions, and a hot garage is a poor place for food.

For a power outage, set aside food that needs no preparation water or cooking at all. Where a meal needs a stove, follow the food guide's outdoor cooking safety advice.

06 Common questions

Does a 30-day emergency kit feed two people for a month?

No. The Augason kit's 30 days use the maker's 1,290-calorie daily allowance for one person. At 2,000 calories per person, its 38,700 calories work out to about 9.7 days for two adults.

How long does a bucket last once opened?

Check the packaging inside. For these Augason pails, the sealed inner pouches keep their shelf life when you open the outer bucket. The clock changes when you open an individual food pouch. Follow its label and store any remaining dry mix properly.

Are more servings a better deal?

Only if the servings provide enough food and come in pouch sizes your household can use. Compare total calories, price per 1,000 calories, the number of sealed pouches, and whether the contents are meals, sides, drinks, or desserts.

Which kit is easiest when the power is out?

Dry granola and ordinary ready-to-eat pantry foods are simplest. Mountain House meals need safe water but no pot, while most Augason meals require water and cooking. Keep a no-cook layer even if you own buckets.

07 How we compared these kits

We checked the linked U.S. Amazon product pages for one-time purchase prices on September 25, 2026, and the manufacturers' product pages for calorie totals, pouch counts, and preparation water. For Mountain House, we multiplied each pouch's calories by its count in the Amazon listing's nutrition-facts image and added them; the manufacturer's current page shows a different mix. Calculations are ours: price ÷ total calories × 1,000 for cost per 1,000 calories, and total calories ÷ 4,000 for theoretical two-adult days. We did not taste-test these kits or grade them from customer star ratings.

Amazon can change sellers, prices, assortment photos, and selected variations. The ReadyWise entrée listing is especially inconsistent about four- versus six-serving pouches. Check the selected ASIN, nutrition label, allergens, contents, and best-by details at checkout and on delivery.
